The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has a long and rich history of significant achievements in imaging, from the early developments of ultrasound imaging and its bioeffects, to the development of magnetic resonance imaging by the late Paul Lauterbur, who received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2003 for his work in establishing this technique. With computational strengths at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and over 100 faculty across many departments, colleges, and interdisciplinary institutes, Illinois is positioned to make major advances in imaging. Imaging, and the visualization of images, are pervasive elements in our data-rich lives, and the Strategic Initiative on Imaging will be a Beckman Institute effort to build a campus-wide, collaborative, integrated community of faculty, researchers, and students in imaging science, imaging technology, and the application, use, and interpretation of images. Beckman Institute's Strategic Initiative on Imaging finalized its fall workshop. The Imaging at Illinois Workshop will be held on October 1st, 2009 at the Beckman Institute. A wide array of speakers will attempt to highlight some of the many imaging aspects on campus. The theme for this year is 'Highlighting the Science, Technology and Application of Imaging' by using the idea that imaging is pervasive. Professor Stephen A. Boppart will host this years event.

Beckman Institute Forum for Imaging and Visualization

Starting Semptember 1, 2009

a

The purpose of the Beckman Institute Forum for Imaging and Visualization is to highlight/publicize imaging and visualization capabilities at the University; to feature the work of faculty who utilize those capabilities; and to serve as a locus from which new imaging and visualization modalities may be introduced to the University. The intent of the Forum is to convey information, weekly, to researchers from a wide swath of disciplines. Thus, a solid introduction to the pertinent principles should be provided before launching into difficult concepts.

Xing Liang Awarded Beckman Fellowship

Xing Liang has been awarded Beckman Graduate Fellowships for the 2009-2010 academic year. Xing received funding for his project, entitled "Measuring biomechanical properties on tissue and cellular levels using multimodal imaging techniques". The Beckman Graduate Fellowship provides an 11 month stipend plus funds to attend one national meeting. Congratulations, Xing!

Freddy Nguyen Reported in Science

Freddy Nguyen

"Freddy Nguyen had such a hard time learning about M.D./Ph.D. programs that he vowed to help other applicants avoid a similar fate. Last month, the organization that grew out of his frustration, the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA), hosted its fourth annual meeting in Chicago. The group is doing well enough for the 26-year-old Nguyen, an M.D./Ph.D. candidate at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, to step down as president and hand the reins to the next generation." -- Science, May 2008

Vasilica Crecea Awarded Linda Su-Nan Chang Sah Doctoral Fellowship

Vasilica Crecea has been awarded Linda Su-Nan Chang Sah Doctoral Fellowship for the 2007-2008 academic years. She received funding for her project, entitled "Optical diagnostic imaging using magnetic nanoparticles as contrast agents". The fellowship provides an award to an outstanding female Ph.D. candidate in electrical and computer engineering. Congratulations, Vasi!
