The Biophotonics Imaging Laboratory at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has an immediate opening for a post-doctoral research associate in the area of nonlinear optical imaging systems for biomedical applications. Headed by Prof. Stephen Boppart, the Biophotonics Imaging Laboratory is a dynamic and productive interdisciplinary research and training environment focused on developing novel optical biomedical imaging technologies, translating them into clinical applications, and driving them toward commercialization for improving healthcare.
This position will also offer the opportunity to work within the Center for Optical Molecular Imaging, which is supported under an academic-industry partnership agreement with GlaxoSmithKline. The research focus of this Center is on the development of advanced multimodal optical imaging platforms for driving drug discovery and development. Representative projects include optical molecular imaging of drug dynamics and therapeutic responses in cells, in vivo pre-clinical animal models, and human subjects. Candidates may also be involved in conducting human clinical trials in collaboration with physicians from local and regional medical institutions.
This academic position is most suitable for an outgoing and driven individuals with leadership goals, and a willingness to take on more independent responsibilities while working as part of an integrated research team of engineers, industry scientists, and collaborating clinicians.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, optical engineering, bioengineering, physics, or related fields. Successful candidates with a strong experimental research background in ultrafast optics, super-resolution microscopy, nonlinear optical imaging techniques for biomedical applications such as multiphoton microscopy, stimulated Raman scattering microscopy and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy, and/or design and development of fiber optic probes are encouraged to apply. Experience with pre-clinical research using cells and animals, and clinical research with human subjects and physician collaborators is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.
